Winter Curls

Jan 11, 2024

Caring for curls during the winter is crucial, as colder temperatures, dry air, and indoor heating can contribute to hair dryness and frizz. Here are some tips to help you maintain healthy and well-hydrated curls during the winter:

  1. Hydrate Your Hair and Scalp
    • Use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner specifically designed for curly hair.
    • Consider co-washing (washing with conditioner only) to retain natural oils and moisture. Our Peppermint Co-Wash is perfect.
    • Healthy hair is great but it comes from the scalp so we can’t neglect it! Flaking, dry, even itchy scalps in the winter are the worst and without attention, will get worse. Grab our multi-use oil and give your scalp some much needed love and attention. Happy scalp = Happy Curls.
  2. Deep Conditioning:
    • Incorporate deep conditioning treatments into your routine to provide extra moisture.
    • Use a hydrating hair mask or deep conditioner at least once a week.
  3. Limit Heat Styling:
    • Minimize the use of heat styling tools, such as flat irons and curling irons, as they can contribute to dryness.
  4. Protective Styling:
    • Consider protective hairstyles, such as braids, twists, or buns, to minimize exposure to harsh weather.
    • Use satin or silk hair accessories to prevent breakage and friction.
  5. Regular Trimming:
    • Schedule regular trims to remove split ends and prevent breakage.
    • Healthy ends contribute to overall curl definition and vitality.
  6. Avoid Overwashing:
    • Limit washing your hair to prevent stripping away natural oils.
    • Use a sulfate-free shampoo to retain moisture.
  7. Hydrating Products:
    • Use leave-in conditioners, curl creams, or hair oils to maintain moisture.
    • Apply products when your hair is damp to lock in hydration.
  8. Protective Headgear:
    • Wear a satin or silk-lined hat to protect your curls from the drying effects of winter weather.
    • Avoid cotton hats, as they can absorb moisture from your hair.
  9. Humidifier:
    • Use a humidifier in your home to combat the dry indoor air caused by heating systems.
  10. Drink Water and Maintain a Healthy Diet:
    • Stay hydrated by drinking enough water throughout the day.
    • Consume a balanced diet rich in vitamins and nutrients to promote overall hair health.

Remember that everyone's hair is unique, so it may take some experimentation to find the best winter hair care routine for your specific curl type. Adjust these tips based on your hair's needs and preferences.
